An epidemic is a sudden outbreak of disease that spreads through a single population or region in a short amount of time.

A pandemic occurs when there is a rapidly-spreading epidemic of a disease that affects most countries andregions of the world. 1918-flu-pandemic1

It all started going wrong in the mid 20th century, with the concept of sustainable family farming falling to pieces and being modified and slowly replaced with massive corporations, maximizing profits at great cost to both humans and animals. Factory farming was born, animals were packed so close that suddenly there was no space to be alive. The animal feed (amongst other unmentionables) was packed with heavy antibiotics to ward off the rapidly-spreading disease and keep the livestock at their barely-living state. This over-use of antibotics breeds SUPER VIRUSES, super streams of viruses we never knew how to treat in the first place. These viruses make their way beyond the metal fences of the ‘farm’, beyond the 160 degrees the meat is eventually cooked at and directly into our weakened immune systems.

It seems alien to me that in a world were pandemic outbreaks already exist; Malaria; approximately 350–500 million cases each year. Aids with infection rates as high as 25% in southern and eastern Africa; One–third of the world’s population has been infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and new infections occur at a rate of one per second; In 2002, 763,917 new cases of Leprosy were detected, it is estimated that there are between one and two million people permanently disabled because of leprosy; to mention but a few, that we should wage this biological warfare against ourselves.

It is self destruction at an almost comical point, we are so beyond trying to seek salvation from the wreck of our ecology, our economy, our health; the most basic of all human necessities. We are self-destructing to distract from the mess. In this world of western swollen bellies vs. swollen bellies that occur below the poverty line, we can’t get a large enough dose of our own medicine. Ignorance and self loathing leading, big boss over-eating.

As we try to predict the manifestations of our own small-scale pandemic, panicking the west and scaring the big bustling cities; Its just one more big paycheck for GlaxosmithKline, shares have rocketed, money pocketed instead of being sent straight to where it is needed the most. We pinpoint our vision to suit our mood, to suit our way of life, to make us ‘feel better’ (tagline of afore mentioned pharmaceuitical company), ignoring starvation, disease manifestations, breech of human rights; the lack of access to clean water. Just how much money would that cost?

Go on, cough up.
